Manticora – a rare predator of African deserts
The inhospitable desert regions of Africa are home to beetles of the Manticora genus, which command respect with their appearance alone. Also known as “tiger beetles,” they are among the most predatory beetles in the world. Their powerful mandibles can easily catch and crush other insects and even smaller animals. During the day, they hide in burrows dug in the sand and only go out hunting at night. Thanks to their speed, strength, and imposing appearance, they are a symbol of the wild energy of African nature.
Manticora tyrranus is a rare, recently described species with the largest mandibles.
Although they look menacing, when framed they become a fascinating exhibit – a combination of raw power and natural beauty. The detailed structure of the body, shiny elytra, and characteristic shape of the mandibles make each specimen truly unique.
